The Spiritual Companions Project

The Spiritual Companions Project has emerged out of twenty years research into the core concepts and strategies of the world's spiritual traditions.

It seeks to clarify the essence of spirituality whilst respecting and celebrating the vast number of diverse ways by which people enquire into the meaning and mystery of existence.
It networks and supports people who share a similar approach of mind and heart. It also seeks to research and educate about best practice where people might describe their approach or work as being spiritually oriented.

The core of our work is to support people into a spiritual practice that is totally authentic for them.

The first drafting of the Guidelines happened over a three year period and involved participation and comments from 200 people.

SPIRITUAL COMPANIONS GUIDELINES
We call our approach ‘spiritual’. This indicates that as an ongoing life style and daily practice, we aim towards the following:

SPIRIT/TAO
• Regularly connect with, experience and explore the wonder of existence.
• Appreciate that all life is in a continual process of emergence and are comfortable with unknowing.

EMBODIMENT AND HARA
• Are grounded and centered in our bodies.
• Can still at will.
• Can assert clear boundaries and intervene, when appropriate, to stop abuse.

ENERGETIC WELCOMING
• Provide a non-intrusive, welcoming, healing and holding presence.
• Enable sacred space.
• Celebrate diversity and welcome the many different paths of spiritual development.

COMMUNITY
• Are engaged citizens, actively dedicated to social and ecological health and honoring the spirit in all beings.
• Are aware of local resources.

PSYCHOLOGICAL/EMOTIONAL
• Self-reflect and manage our behavior, health and development with compassion, love and wisdom.
• Possess a sense of humor
• Are emotionally literate and transparent about our own processes – actively seeking and welcoming feedback from others.
• Understand the psychological challenges that occur as the everyday self emerges into spiritual consciousness.
• Can take responsibility, apologise, forgive and receive forgiveness.
• Listen with care and enable people to clarify and own their own psycho-spiritual development.
• Know our personal and professional limitations and are able to refer appropriately.

These guidelines are work in progress – and always will be. We warmly welcome feedback and especially need suggestions for resources and further reading.
